My new "thing"

Is it a hobby? an obsession? a treat? a fad?

I don't know what you'd want to call it - but it's one of my new "loves" - SMOOTHIES!

I've had a hard time eating all the fruits and veggies that I need. Good nutrition is just not my thing. Why - I just don't like the foods. It's not that I don't "want" to eat all those superfoods - I just don't like them. So what's a girl to do? I want to make sure my family is eating healthy foods, but it's hard to make them when I myself don't eat them. The crazy thing is - I love fruit smoothies... but won't eat the individual fruits. Don't like blueberries, pineapple, raspberries, mango, pomegrantes, etc... but put them in a blender and YUMMO! And when it's that good, you can throw in healthy things like agave nectar, flaxseed, etc.

And Megan LOVES to help. It's always a blast when we make fun smoothies together - it's soooo much fun! I love that Megan knows what she's eating so that she can identify good healthy foods. It's made her much more willing to try foods like mango and peaches. She will tell you, "no thank you, it's only good in smoothies." Andthen when she's downing her smoothie she will tell me that she tastes the yummy cherries (which like her momma, she doesn't eat on their own).

So... I've moved into a the world of smoothies - and boy howdy it's a great world to be in. I'm still experimenting and coming up with our family favorites - but it's our new "dessert". And the biggest critic of all....
...LOVES THEM! Little does she know how much nutrition is in that "treat".

So, I don't know why i just don't like all the individual ingredients... but put them in a smoothie and I think they hang the moon. Why is that? Texture? At any rate regardless of the reason, it's a great feeling to know that I can make something super healthy and all natural and its' loved by the whole family.

And this little one....

One day, she'll too learn about the creamy and nutritous goodness of the smoothie.

So.... go make a smoothie!
Our favorite recipe to date.....
blueberries, cherries, peaches, pineapple, a banana, a cup of natural yogurt, 1/2 cup of apple juice or orange juice, and about a Tablespoon or so (I just squirt so can't really tell you the exact measuring of anything) of Agave Nectar. I use frozen fruit so that makes it more of a frosty treat and you don't have to add ice or anything. If you find it's too think - just add a bit more juice or yogurt. It's just all natural goodness! And the reality is.... just throw in whatever fruit you have on hand. If you want to add a sweetner (which sometimes you might need if you add protein powder or such - it does make a good meal on the go), I recommend a sweetner like OJ, Agave nectar, or honey. And peaches or Pineapple give it a nice refreshing zing - yum! We are about to start making specific colored smoothies - red, yellow, blue. That should be fun. And just a plug here (a valmercial) - Agave nectar is awesome. If you are looking to cut some sugar out of your diet - it's a great sweetner and even Megan loves it. It's super yummy in hot tea.

I have never heard of Agave Nectar! Do you get it at a regular store?

In the summer my kids will eat their weight in fruit. But, it is harder when they are not seasonal. I have started giving Carson some fruit with dinner when he does not like the veggie we are eating. Macie is a little better, but not great.

Okay, I am really past due about reading my favorite blogs, so you may never see this, but I make green smoothies here almost everyday. We do just like you, but I cut up some spinach and blend it with whatever liquid I am using first. I really blend it and then add all the fruit. If you add a dark berry--which I did at first, the kids don't even notice. If you don't have something dark, then it turns the smoothies green, which the kids are used to now. Even if you don't do it often, you could do it for st. patty's day!!
